Tanzania is one of Africa’s largest gold producers, where the majority of gold exports are dominated by large mining companies. Yet, around 10% of the gold is still extracted by local, small-scale miners, who tirelessly search for untapped veins in areas not yet licensed by the government. When these informal dig sites prove successful, investors often move in with machinery and professional crews, forcing the original miners to leave.
